The Prime Minister message on Republic Day

New Delhi
January 26, 2000

The Golden Jubilee of our Republic is a major milestone in the nation's journey along the path of democracy which the nation adopted on January 26, 1950.

At this defining moment, India looks at her past with pride and to her future with confidence. In the last 50 years, India has achieved many successes, but there are many unfinished tasks ahead of us. Together, we should strive to make India a prosperous nation, free from poverty, hunger, disease and illiteracy. Above all, we have to remain ever-vigilant against threats to our country's unity and integrity.

Let the glorious legacy of our freedom struggle continue to guide us in the new century. Let our commitment towards the principles of secularism, social justice, egalitarianism and non-violence remain firm as ever.

On this day, let us rededicate ourselves to the noble principles of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity on which the Republic of India was founded.

Jai Hind.
