India-US workshop on modern terminal markets opens in New Delhi

New Delhi
August 22, 2007
(Press Information Bureau)

A Workshop on Modern Terminal Markets got underway here today. Inaugurating the Workshop Dr. P.K. Mishra, Secretary, Department of Agriculture and Cooperation said that central government has recently initiated the process of promoting terminal markets in the country under a Central Sector Scheme. He urged upon potential investors to take advantage of the scheme and requested the state governments to play a proactive role in creating an investor-friendly atmosphere for this purpose. Modern Terminal Markets would go a long way towards integrating domestic producers with food processing industries, retail chains and emerging global markets, while offering premium prices to farmers based on quality, in a competitive environment and transparent manner, he added.

Organised by National Institute of Agricultural Marketing and US Agency for International Development, the two-day Workshop will deliberate on a range of issues involved in the development of marketing facilities. There will be direct interaction between the US experts on terminal markets and the stakeholders from India in the technical sessions of the Workshop.
