Message from Gen. VP Malik Chief of Army Staff New Delhi Over 200 gallant soldiers have recently laid down their lives at the altar of the Nation. These soldiers courageously made the supreme sacrifice in utter disregard to their personal safety, aspirations and families left behind. I am grateful to all our citizens for the unstinted support and sympathy shown towards these martyrs. However, what it is not remembered is that since 1947, almost 17000 soldiers have similarly laid down their lives for the safety and honour of the Nation. Truly, for our tomorrow, they gave their today. No amount of words of material help can ever match the sacrifice of these young men. A grateful Nation, however, must continue to remember, recognise and honour the families of these gallant soldiers. Towards this end, we have instituted a token symbol, a Badge of Sacrifice, that shall be presented to the family of the fallen soldier. It is our earnest request that the next-of-kin wear this badge with pride. More importantly, I hope that our citizens will recognise this symbol of courage and sacrifice for all times to come, and honour the great loss to the family and to the Nation. |
