Economic Development and Social Peace go hand in hand with rule of law: Prime Minister
The Prime Minister Vajpayee has emphasized that "Security for Development" should become the watchword of the nation as social peace and rule of law is sine qua non for economic development (more).

Environment Minister asks SAARC nation to adopt common position on environmental issues.
The Environment & Forest Minister Suresh Prabhu has asked the SAARC nations to adopt a common position on major global environment issues, so that the region’s, voice carries greater weight. Mr. Prabhu was speaking at the 4th SAARC Environment Ministers’ meeting in Colombo on November 1, 1998 (more).

India to be Chairman of Commission for Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources.
India has been elected Chairman of the Commission for Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) for a two-year term in a meeting of 23 CCAMLR Member countries held at Hobart, Australia (more).

Passport Rule Changes
As part of Government's continuing endeavor of streamline procedures for issue and servicing of passports for the benefit of the general public, it has been decided to discontinue the present system of endorsing the names of minor children in their parents' passports and to issue separate passports to minor children (more).

 



Six more Tiger reserves to be created in next four years.
It has been decided by the Ministry of Environment & Forests to create Six more Tiger Reserves during the remaining period of the Ninth Five Year Plan. Two of the areas have already been identified. These are Bhadra in Karnataka and Pench in Maharashtra (more).

India & Israel set $1billion target for bilateral trade by 2000 AD.
India and Israel have proposed a target of US $ 1 billion for bilateral trade to be achieved by the year 2000. At the Second Meeting of the India-Israel Joint Trade and Economic Committee which concluded in New Delhi, it has been agreed by both sides that there is a need for expansion of bilateral trade (more).

National high speed inter-university data network of India to be established.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and IUNet, a US based educational institute, to establish Sankhya Vahini, a National High Speed Inter-University Data Network of India (more).

India and Russia agree to enhance cooperation in electronics and information field.
India and Russia signed a protocol to enhance their cooperation in the electronics, computer and the information technology sector (more).
