This six-part class, richly illustrated with slides, explores the timeless thousand-year-old traditions of this land of legend, romance, and heroism that has inspired poets, painters, photographers, novelists, and playwrights for centuries.

Devi: The Great Goddess
March 28 - Sept. 6, 1999
Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery Smithsonian Institution

The Great Goddess, known simply as Devi, plays a profound emotional and visual role in the artistic and religious life of India. Devi is pictured and worshiped in many guises--the approachable "mother"; the detached "mother of the universe"; the benign and benevolent giver; and the most powerful of cosmic beings whose blessings lead to ultimate salvation. Approximately 120 works of Indian art, ranging over a period of 2,000 years, are on loan from collectors and museums in Europe and the United States for this exhibition. Included are sculptures in bronze, stone and terra-cotta, and-1paintings on paper, cloth and board.

A 408-page, color- illustrated catalog, published by Mapin publishing Pv . Ltd. of India, accompanies the exhibition. "Devi" is made possible by generous 9 ants from Enron/Enron Oil & Gas International, the Rockefeller Foundation, The Starr Foundation, Hughes Network Systems, and the ILA Foundation, Chicago. Related programs are made possible by Victoria P. and Roger W. Sant, the Smithsonian Educational Outreach Fund, and the Hazen Polsky Foundation.
