Goddess The Great Goddess, known simply as Devi, plays a profound emotional and visual role in the artistic and religious life of India. Devi is pictured and worshiped in many guises--the approachable "mother"; the detached "mother of the universe"; the benign and benevolent giver; and the most powerful of cosmic beings whose blessings lead to ultimate salvation. Approximately 120 works of Indian art, ranging over a period of 2,000 years, are on loan from collectors and museums in Europe and the United States for this exhibition. Included are sculptures in bronze, stone and terra-cotta, and-1paintings on paper, cloth and board. A 408-page, color- illustrated catalog, published by Mapin publishing Pv . Ltd. of India, accompanies the exhibition.
