Embassy Diary On December 7, Ambassador Naresh Chandra addressed the Woodrow Wilson Center at Princeton University. The subject of his address was Indo-US relations. In particular, he addressed the post May 1998 situation and India's position on nuclear issues and disarmament after the nuclear tests last year. On December 14, Ambassador Naresh Chandra spoke at the Washington India Business Council on investment opportunities in India. He reiterated India's continuing commitment to economic liberalization and highlighted recent policy initiatives in this regard. Mr. T.P. Sreenivasan, Deputy Chief of Mission, spoke at the 7th Carnegie International Non-proliferation Conference on January 12. He gave a detailed analysis of India's position on nuclear issues and the rationale for the nuclear tests. He reiterated India's need for minimum credible deterrent to ensure its national security as well as its continuing commitment to global nuclear disarmament. A two-day meeting of Consul Generals from New York, San Francisco, Houston and Chicago was held on January 15-16, 1999 at Embassy of India, Washington D.C. The CGs briefed the Ambassador and other officials on the activities to be undertaken by the Consulates over the coming months. Presentations were also made by different Wings of the Embassy to apprise the Consul Generals of recent developments and plans over the next few months. On January 17, Ambassador Naresh Chandra, Mr. T.P. Sreenivasan and other officials met representatives of the Indian community in the Embassy. This meeting provided an opportunity for an exchange of views between the Embassy and the community representatives on various aspects of Indo-US relations and other issues of interests to the Indian community. On January 22, the Embassy of India hosted a meeting of the Netsap at which Mr. Vikram Chandra, Indian author, read from his recent book, "Love and Longing from Bombay". |
