National Water Policy being revised:PM

The Prime Minister Vajpayee has said that the Government is revising the National Water Policy to meet the needs of the changing scenario. He called for use of modern technologies like remote sensing and nuclear technique to optimize the availability of our water resources to meet the developmental goals. (more)

500 MW power to be bought from Pakistan

Technical-level discussions were held between Pakistan and India, on the issue of Export of Power to India, in Islamabad on November 25-26, 1998. The Joint Statement issued in Islamabad on the sale of power is attached. (more)

Prime Minister's address at the Chief Ministers Conference to review the price situation in New Delhi

The Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee said that there is need for the Center and the States to draw some conclusions from the recent experiences on the price front and take appropriate corrective actions. Some of the steps, he suggested include, reviewing Essential Commodities' Act, and establishing National Crop Forecasting Center. (more)

IT action plan will accelerate reforms process: Bakht

Inaugurating the IT World ‘98/Comdex India Exhibition in New Delhi on November 1, 1998, Mr. Sikander Bakht, Union Minister of Industry said that the recommendations in the Information Technology (IT) Action Plan will speed up, broaden and deepen the process of economic reforms by encouraging competition, entrepreneurship and innovation. Task Force set up to prepare tourism action plan

Ministry of Tourism has set up four task forces to prepare action plan for development of Tourism. The task force consisting of representatives of industries and other experts will study the problems, interact with the people involved in tourism activities and undertake comparative study of tourism plans of various countries. National Commission for Children to be arms with statutory powers

The proposal for formation of National Commission for Children is likely to be placed before Parliament in the Budget session. This was stated by the Minister for Human Resource Development, Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi at the Consultative Committee Meeting of Ministry of HRD. (more)

National Security Council set up

The Prime Minister has approved the establishment of the National Security Council. The structure of the National Security Council envisages a three-tier structure and is essentially based on the report of the Task Force which it had recently submitted to the Prime Minister.  The National Security Council will be headed by the Prime Minister and will have the following membership: Home Minister, Defense Minister, External Affairs Minister, Finance Minister and Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission. Kalam asks scientists to keep technology from Geo-Politics

The Chairman of the Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC), Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has asked the scientific community to ensure that technology does not become a pawn in the hands of geo-politics.  Dr. Abdul Kalam was inaugurating the third international conference and biennial meeting of International Association of Technology Assessment and Forecasting Institutions (IATAFI-98), in New Delhi. Prime Minister meets group of people involved in AIDS awareness campaign

December 1st is the World AIDS Day. On this occasion, a group of 25 people consisting of NGOs working on HIV/AIDS, children and some HIV infected people called on the Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee in New Delhi. (more)

30th International Film Festival of India to be held during January 10-20, 1999

The International Film Festival of India-1999 is to be held in Hyderabad from January 10 to 20, 1999. This is being organized by Directorate of Film Festivals, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting  in collaboration with Government of Andhra Pradesh and Indian Film Industry. (more)

Prime Minister's address at the Global Indian entrepreneurs Conference

The Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has reiterated that the process of economic reforms is being accelerated with several initiatives aimed at revitalizing economic growth. Stressing that the sustainability of economic reforms was crucially dependent on equitable distribution of the benefits of growth, he underlined the need to cut through the columns of complex, regulations and take other steps to reduce political and administrative interference. India-Hungary celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations

A symposium on "Hungary, India and the European Union" was inaugurated on November 26, 1998 by Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi, Minister for Human Resource Development, to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Hungary. The Symposium was co-inaugurated by the Hungarian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Janos Herman. (more)
