Prime Minister Vajpayee to address joint meeting of Congress

The Speaker of U.S. House of Representatives J. Dennis Hastert and U.S. Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott announced that Congress has extended an invitation to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee of India to address a joint meeting of Congress on September 14, 2000.

"India is one of the United States' most important allies from a strategic, economic and political perspective," the Speaker said.

Lott added, "We stand on the threshold of a new, more positive relationship with India. I look forward to hearing from the Prime Minister."

The joint meeting is an opportunity for Members of the House and Senate to hear Prime Minister Vajpayee address issues of mutual concern including trade, energy, science, information technology and security matters.
