President
Clinton's visit to India is the fourth by a US President. Earlier visits
were by Presidents Dwight Eisenhower (1959), Richard Nixon (1969) and
Jimmy Carter (1978). President Clinton's visit is taking place at a time of warming of relations between the two countries, and reflects the common desire of both countries to move towards a broad-based, forward-looking, politically constructive and economically productive partnership.
