Dr. M. R. Srinivasan joined the Department of Atomic Energy of India in 1955 as an early member of Homi Bhabha's team and participated in
constructing India's first research reactor Apsara from 1956-57. As Principal Project Engineer, Tarapur from 1959-66, Dr. Srinivasan led the
team responsible for planning and execution of India's first atomic power station at Tarapur built with American collaboration. The plant
went into operation in October 1969 and is continuing to be in service for the past 32 years.
From early 1987 to his retirement in 1990, Dr. Srinivasan took over as Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary Department of Atomic
Energy. Under his leadership the Nuclear Power Corporation was set up with the objectives of facilitating the production of commercial nuclear
power in the country along more corporate and commercial lines and Dr. Srinivasan became the Founder Chairman of the Nuclear Power Corporation
in 1987. Dr. M.R. Srinivasan had a major role in the selection of all nuclear power sites from Tarapur onwards. Since 2002 he has served as a
Member of the National Security Advisory Board concerned with advising the Government on national security issues.
